AEO and GEO Explained: How to Get Your Business Mentioned in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews – banner
Quick answer

AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) make your business easy for AI tools to understand, trust and cite. The core steps are: answer real customer questions clearly on your site, add schema markup, keep business details consistent across the web, earn reviews and mentions, and allow AI crawlers to read your site.

Customers no longer only “Google it”. They ask ChatGPT for the best clinic nearby, ask Gemini to compare two coaching institutes, or read Google's AI Overview without clicking a single link. If AI tools do not know your business, you are invisible in a growing share of searches. That is where AEO and GEO come in.

SEO, AEO and GEO — the difference

  • SEO helps your pages rank in classic search results.
  • AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) structures your content so search engines and voice assistants can lift a direct answer from it.
  • GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) helps large language models like ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Perplexity recognise and recommend your brand.

They are not replacements for each other. Good AEO and GEO are built on top of solid SEO.

7 steps to become AI-visible

  1. Answer questions in plain language. Write pages and FAQs around the exact questions customers ask: costs, timelines, comparisons, “is it worth it”. Put a 2–3 sentence answer first, then the detail.
  2. Use clear structure. Descriptive headings, short paragraphs, lists and tables are easier for AI to quote.
  3. Add schema markup. Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage and Article schema tell machines exactly who you are and what you offer.
  4. Be consistent everywhere. The same business name, address, phone and description on your website, Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles.
  5. Build your entity. Link your website to your social profiles, founder profile and listings so AI can connect them as one brand.
  6. Earn mentions and reviews. AI tools lean on what others say: reviews, news, industry lists, forums and partner websites.
  7. Let AI crawlers in. Check that your robots.txt does not block bots like GPTBot, ClaudeBot or PerplexityBot. Many sites block them by accident.

An llms.txt file: a small, useful extra

Some sites now publish an llms.txt file — a short plain-text summary of the business, its services and key pages. It is not an official standard yet, but it costs nothing and gives AI tools a clean overview.

How to check if AI knows you

Ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity questions your customers ask, such as “best digital marketing agency in Gurugram for small business” or “who repairs Honda cars in DLF Phase 3”. Note who gets mentioned and which sources are cited. Those sources are where you need to appear.

What not to do

  • Do not publish hundreds of thin AI-written pages. Quality and originality matter more than volume.
  • Do not hide key information inside images or PDFs only.
  • Do not chase tricks; AI systems change fast, but clear, trustworthy information keeps working.

Frequently asked questions

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AEO and GEO build on SEO. Pages that rank well and are clearly structured are also the ones AI tools tend to cite.

How long does it take to appear in AI answers?

It varies. Fixing structure and schema can help within weeks for search features, while being recommended by AI models usually takes months of consistent mentions and reviews.

Should I block AI bots from my website?

For most service businesses, no. Blocking AI crawlers can keep your business out of AI answers your customers are reading.
